"Six months after the La Renaissance musicale, on October 20, 1881, appeared, under the direction of Mr. Arthur Pougin, a newspaper which presented itself under new and special conditions, La Musique populaire, a newspaper deserving of its title and by the way it was included and by the price at which it was offered to the public. La Musique populaire appeared in eight pages of illustrated text and eight pages of music, priced at 15 cents per issue. The editorial staff endeavored to respond to its title by popularizing, in the good sense of the word, knowledge relating to the history of art and artists, by varying the subjects as much as possible, and by keeping the reader aware of all the facts which could interest him. As for the musical part proper, it included pieces of song, or piano, or violin, by contemporary authors, often unpublished, to which were added (and this was the new side) fragments of classical operas including there were no scores on the piano, which, therefore, were unknown to the mass of the public; these fragments, chosen with the greatest care from the works of Campra, Philidor, Sacchini, Piccinni, Dezèdes, D'Alayrac, Méhul, Bertini, Solié, etc., were presented with a piano accompaniment, the reduction of which was made expressly for this journal. Success could not fail to host a publication of this kind. Also, from the first days, its effective circulation amounted to more than fifteen thousand copies. Unfortunately, at the end of about a year, new publishers wanted to impose new conditions on this publication which completely changed its nature and which brought about the retirement of the editor-in-chief. To him succeeded MM. Alphonse Baralle, Bailly, etc .; the newspaper lost its raison d'etre, exchanged its title for that of La Musique des familles, gradually declined and ended by disappearing."

A celui-ci succédèrent MM.
