Nuvellist: Musical-Theatrical Gazette (Нувеллист: Музьікально-Театральная Газета) is one of the oldest and longest-running music periodicals in pre-revolutionary Russia. Considerable attention throughout is focused on Russian music and musical life. Regularly encountered are biographical sketches, music and book reviews focusing on the life and works of composers both in the forefront of Russian musical life—Balakirev, Glazunov, Glinka, Dargomyzhsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, A. Rubinstein and Tchaikovsky—and on lesser-known figures, such as Grigory Andreyevich Lishin, Victor Nikandrovich Paskhalov, Nikolay Feopemptovich Solov’yov and Boris Alexandrovich Fitingoff-Scheel.
Frequently treated are the activities of music societies, including the Chamber Music Society in St. Petersburg, the Moscow Philharmonic Society, and the Imperial Russian Music Society. Many issues feature reviews of performances by, among others, Leopold Auer, Hans von Bülow, Anna Esipova, Anton Rubinstein, and Pablo Sarasate. A large number of articles focus on the activities of the Russian music theatres with priority given to the Imperial Russian Opera both in St. Petersburg and Moscow. Extensive reviews are devoted to productions of works by composers such as Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Tchaikovsky. There is also a wealth of information concerning the activities of instrumentalists performing in St. Petersburg and Moscow and reports on Russian artists (A. and N. Rubinstein, Tchaikovsky, Vinogradsky, Timanova, Esipova, Ziloti) performing in Europe and in the Americas. These are but a few of the subjects treated in this remarkably rich primary source of documentation about music in nineteenth-century Russia.
