(Warsaw, 1820-1821)

1 volume* (2000)

Tygodnik Muzyczny, the first Polish music journal, appeared during a period of great development in Polish musical life. The journal’s editor, its publisher and principal contributor was Karol Kurpiński, the director of Warsaw opera, and a composer highly regarded by contemporaries. Kurpiński’s articles deal with aesthetics, theoretical issues, historical subjects (Polish opera, Polish folksong) and musical instruments. He also translated French texts by Antoine Reicha and Castil-Blaze for the journal. Noteworthy are the reviews and news concerning the National Theatre and Warsaw’s concert life. Contributors include Ludwik Adam Dmuszewski and Józef Dionizy Minasowicz. Over half of the journal’s fifty issues contain music appendices.
